Women Who Rock: Making Scenes, Building Communities (un)conference brings scholars, musicians, performers, visual artists, media-makers, community leaders and activists together to explore the role of women in the creation of popular music that anchors cultural scenes and social justice movements.
This year we are celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Womxn Who Rock Community by acknowledging the value of community and the power of ofrendas. We are collaborating with diverse local communities to participate in an ofrenda (offering) altar art installation called “Ofrendas for the Future.”
As we collectively envision building future freedom, we welcome you to join us in honoring the practices of the resilience of those who are passed through the reclamation of ancestral rituals. Altar ofrenda building is a traditional practice of processing collective grieving that is a part of many communities that allow our ancestors to bridge the past, present, and future.
This year we are honored to be welcoming the National Endowment for the Arts Heritage Fellow, Ofelia Esparza as our visiting artist. Esparza is a beloved elder Altarista from East Los Angeles who practices the Mexican traditions of ofrenda and altar making on both small and large scale.
The event will feature:
- participatory ofrenda-building
- dialogue about the healing power of ofrenda
- children’s station and button making
- Ofrenda workshop by Ofelia (official title)
- craft vendors, food vendors
- and more for all ages
